The first time I heard of Belize was in a show called “Breaking Bad”. Though the context in the show had nothing to do with traveling to the country Belize, and instead was used as euphemism, the mere mention of the country sparked my interest. My search showed me beautiful picture of clear blue sea, palm trees and sandy beach.
Fast forward to few years later – I ended up in Belize by mere chance. As soon as I reached Belize City, I headed straight to this beautiful island in Caribbean Sea called Caye Caulker. Here are the top 5 things to do in Caye Caulker, Belize:
1. Rent a bike
The island itself is small; you can actually see the whole island by walking. However, the sun gets really hot during the day and if walking all hot and sweaty doesn’t sound appealing, then there’s option to rent a bike. I biked along the island and made stops to take pictures. Renting a bike was 5 Belize dollar for an hour.
2. Snorkeling / Diving
This is a perfect place to go for snorkeling/diving for anyone who wants to see marine animals. You get to see and swim with beautiful different types of fish, stingrays and sharks. Yes, sharks. I saw nurse shark sleeping and snorkeled with reef sharks. They were so close that all I had to do was extend my arm if I wanted to touch them. But of course I didn’t because honestly, as amazing as it was to see them and swim with them, I was also little scared. While there are many tours that actually let you feed them as well, but I don’t think it’s a good idea as it causes interference with the natural process. Thus, I went with a tour company “Reef Friendly Tours” (not sponsored) – an eco-friendly company that do not allow feeding and seem to care and respect the natural habitat. Amazing guides too.
3. Yoga
Nothing like stretching your body with the sea view and a cool breeze. “Namaste Yoga” is a donation based yoga and is located on the top floor of a café/restaurant. You are not doing the yoga in front of the actual sea but because you are on the top floor, if you get a good spot, you do see the sea.
4. Iguana Reef Inn
The reason I am recommending this is not for accommodation as I have not stayed there. However, you can get the best sun-set view from there. You don’t have to be their staying guest or buy drink from the bar; you can just walk to the dock and enjoy the best sun-set view for free. They have water swings and water hammocks as well.
5. Food
I was surprised that they had so many variety of food. Dine-in restaurants or street food, grilled meat or fresh seafood or vegetarian food – you can find everything here. When you are there, try different places to eat and drink. There are some fun and unique places – I went to a restaurant with live music on, another with swings at the bar section, there was also a restaurant with karaoke. You can find places with loud music and also places with quite and relaxing atmosphere. The food quality was great too; rich and delicious. Yumm. Do try their coconut curry with rice.
