Guatemala is one of my favorite countries in Central America. I’ve been there more than once and already looking forward to go back again.
Whether you want to be with nature or immerse yourself in the culture, there’s something to do for everyone. Here are the top 10 things to do in Guatemala:
1. Antigua
It’s a beautiful small city not that far from Guatemala City. Usually the first stop for many tourists coming in the country. Cobblestone streets, variety of restaurants and surrounded by volcano mountains.
2. Acatenango Volcano
One of the Must-Do activity! It’s not for everybody but if you love hiking, this would be the highlight of your trip. Everyone I meet, who has traveled to Guatemala, talks about how amazing this was.
3. Chichicastenango
If you love shopping, you’ll love going to Chichicastenango. It’s a huge market and because it’s for local people, the price is very reasonable. I bought 90% of my souvenirs from here and I normally buy quite a bit of souvenirs. Do note that they are only open on Thursdays and Sundays.
4. Lake Atitlan
If you want to just relax by the lake or explore the culture visiting the villages along the lake or hike – you can do everything here. My only regret in Guatemala was not staying here long enough.
5. Quetzaltenango
A city also known as Xela. There’s a beautiful central park there – a perfect place to sit and “people watch”. Time seem to go slower there as I sat and watched people getting on with their lives – made me feel very present and in the moment.
6. Fuentes Georginas
If you love hot spring as much as I do, then this is the place. It’s a natural sulfur hot spring heated by the thermal water that comes from the Zunil volcano. Mostly locals but perfect place to unwind. Note: they don’t sell swimsuits there.
7. Rio Dulce
This town by the Rio Dulce (River Sweet) is a small town with very busy main street with hustle and bustle from morning till the evening. It’s a perfect place to be with the nature by staying at one of hostels or hotels by the river (you’d need to take boat to access those hostels/hotels).
8. Livingston
A town, only accessibly by boat, is very unique due to the Garifuna culture there. Very distinct food and even the souvenirs at gift shops are unique to this region.
9. Flores
Isla de Flores – a beautiful island. There isn’t much to do on the island itself but just the vibe and the beautiful sunset view was enough to make me want to go back again. It’s more on the pricier side as compared to other places in Guatemala. If you’re there, check out Cool Beans Cafe (not sponsored). It’s a cute little cafe with very reasonable price and a view of the lake.
10. Tikal
If you want to learn about Mayan culture and interested in archeological history, then Tikal is a must. The site and the jungle has a story to tell. I recommend going with a guide because I feel like there are some things we can’t just read on books but need a story teller (guide).
